Hi Chris, Many thanks for this detailed response which definitely helps me have a better understanding of the situation. So, maybe I'm missigng something in your explanation but it seems to me that what you propose is some sort of "a posteriori" diagnostic. Isn't it? In other words, I naively buy a new machine with a 64-bits windows. I proudly come back home with my new machine. And then, I have the bad surprise to notice that my old app or suite does not install on it. In such a case, I'd be quite afraid to buy a 64-bits OS. So, did I miss something in your explanation or is there another more a priori diagnostic for this? Tools to analyze the app or suite, or "compatibility list"? Many thanks. Have a nice day. Basically, if the program appears to install well under a 64 bit operating system, then chances are it will run under that system. Each installation program verifies what platform you're running, and will display some kind of error message or warning if a problem may occur when attempting to install or use the program under a 64 bit operating system. A good example is JAWS. If you try to run the setup program for the 32 bit version under a 64 bit operating system, you'll be greeted by Tom that setup cannot install to this platform and asks you to contact Freedom Scientific I think. Hope this helps. -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Delaunay Christophe Sent: 18 November 2009 16:17 To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: Buying a new computer. Hi Chris, Please can I just ask a question? You just wrote: [CH] >Also consider going 64 bit unless you require programs or drivers that >are not available in 64 bit. [ChD] I know that some of the plain old 32-bits programs can still run under 64-bits OSes but not all of them. For instance, the 32-bits version of J2RE, (Java 2 Runtime Environment) can run under a 64-bits windows. It seemed to be recommended for people who need the java access bridge. Then, the first obvious example of 32-bits programs which cannot run under 64-bits windows which comes to me is jaws. So, here is my question: Let's suppose I have a 32-bits application or suite, (Microsoft Office 2003 for instance). How can I determine whether this application or suite will run or not on a 64-bits windows? Many thanks in advance. Have a nice day. Personally stay away from computers running Vista. Even with the maximum RAM it's still sluggish. I would get a PC with Windows 7. It should have at least a 1GHZ processor and at least 2GB of RAM. Also consider going 64 bit unless you require programs or drivers that are not available in 64 bit. Good luck in your research. -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Julie Bentley Sent: 18 November 2009 15:47 To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Buying a new computer. Hi Listers, I would love to hear specs and software advise for buying a new computer. I will be using jaws 11 and right now have windows xp pro. What kind of hardware specs should be the minimum and maxium? Which software program up grades should I have or stay away from? I also use MS 2003. Any information would be great.
