just another good reason for frequently backing up documents. There are
settings in Word to change how frequently files are backed up. I don't know if
such a setting exists in NotePad.

Yes they do and they have always had it.
The only difference is, that it is a Windows-wide problem. so, no matter
what program you are using that has a selecting/editing capability, when you
select text, audio, video, no matter what, if you accidentally press a key,
other than the arrow keys, page up and page down keys, home and end keys,
whatever you have selected/highlighted, will go up in a puff of smoke. Oh! of
course, Windows will not tell you that the selected/highlighted information has
gone up in a puff of smoke, no warning! You will not even hear the match being
struck, the touch paper being lit, the explosion is silent, your information
just disappears just like a conjurer using their magic trick in pulling a
rabbit out of a hat.
So, if you accidentally do this, immediately press CTRL+Z to undo the action
and restore the selected/highlighted information.

Only problem with this solution is that I have done some other Word
type command *before* I discovered what the problem probably was. Undo only
works on the *LAST* command. (frownie face)

Oh, boy can't tell you how many time's I've accidentally done that, and
wondered where all the text went. Sure is nice to have undo.

The CTRL+A command is the Windows command for highlighting all text
in a document, email message, etc, regardless as to where the cursor is in the
text.
The CTRL+A command, cannot be used to unhighlight text.
Using any of the arrow keys, page up and page down keys and the home
and end keys will unhighlight any text that is highlighted.
Warning! If you have selected/highlighted any text, Pressing a key
that inserts a character, including a space character, will result in the text
that is selected/highlighted, being deleted. If you accidentally do this,
press CTRL+Z to undo your last action and restore the highlighted text.

resulted in JAWS saying, "Selected." When I pressed control-a a second time,
JAWS said, "Unselected." this was in an email message.

Yes, I gave it a try but nothing changed.
Now, even more interesting is the fact that when I am in an email
and press ctrl+A I do hear "selected" but when in a folder such as "deleted
items" or whatever I hear (nothing selected? In both cases the keystroke
actually works properly although JAWS does not think so. (LOLLOLLOL)
Oh well, maybe JAWS V12?

Again, W7 64 bit, Outlook 2007 and an HP Pavilion.
In Outlook when I press ctl+a to select all messages in the
folder JAWS dutifully reports that "Nothing selected" - but - when I do the
shift+delete and then confirm guess what, everything *WAS* selected and all is
gone.
Just thought I would mention the misinformation so someone is
not lulled into thinking that nothing war really selected and makes an
unfortunate discovery. (LOL)
