Cy:

I forgot to mention that information cannot be deleted in a "Read Only" window,
such as the window you use in an email program for reading messages.

  Dave,

When you combine this with the occasional sluggishness of JAWS it really gets
interesting indeed.

Now, I did try the alt+E command not in an open message (Outlook 2007) and
was given a screen telling me that ctrl+Z was unavailable but there was an U
just sorta hanging out at the end of the message. Pressing U caused the undo to
take place. (?)

This does *NOT* happen if you are in an open message. (LOL)

I also suppose it depends on the phase of the moon along with barametric
pressure?

God, I love Winderz7, JAWS 11 and associated Microbloat programs.

As I have said before, take me back to DOS.

  Robert:

Yes they do and they have always had it.

The only difference is, that it is a Windows-wide problem. so, no matter
what program you are using that has a selecting/editing capability, when you
select text, audio, video, no matter what, if you accidentally press a key,
other than the arrow keys, page up and page down keys, home and end keys,
whatever you have selected/highlighted, will go up in a puff of smoke. Oh! of
course, Windows will not tell you that the selected/highlighted information has
gone up in a puff of smoke, no warning! You will not even hear the match being
struck, the touch paper being lit, the explosion is silent, your information
just disappears just like a conjurer using their magic trick in pulling a
rabbit out of a hat.

So, if you accidentally do this, immediately press CTRL+Z to undo the action
and restore the selected/highlighted information.

Please accept my apologies for repeating myself.

    sincerely:

    Dave Durber

What a completely stupid bug. And do all Microsoft editors have this fault?

      Cy,

Oh, yes, I've done that also and further cursed myself by saving the
work. Then it's totally lost unless backed up somehow. In Notepad, it's usually
a lost cause then. I can commiserate.

        Hi,

Only problem with this solution is that I have done some other Word
type command *before* I discovered what the problem probably was. Undo only
works on the *LAST* command. (frownie face)

Oh, boy can't tell you how many time's I've accidentally done that, and
wondered where all the text went. Sure is nice to have undo.

          Adrian:

sorry for the late reply. I was in the UK from 15th June to 4th
July, so I am Catching up. Although I took my laptop, I could not get it fixed
until a few days before my return. Too late to worry about email and the like,
until I got back.

The CTRL+A command is the Windows command for highlighting all text
in a document, email message, etc, regardless as to where the cursor is in the
text.

The CTRL+A command, cannot be used to unhighlight text.

Using any of the arrow keys, page up and page down keys and the home
and end keys will unhighlight any text that is highlighted.

Warning! If you have selected/highlighted any text, Pressing a key
that inserts a character, including a space character, will result in the text
that is selected/highlighted, being deleted. If you accidentally do this,
press CTRL+Z to undo your last action and restore the highlighted text.

When I tried Laura's suggestion, the first press of control-a
resulted in JAWS saying, "Selected." When I pressed control-a a second time,
JAWS said, "Unselected." this was in an email message.

Perhaps it works in XP, which I have, but not Windows 7, which I
know you've advanced to. The only other explanation must be that I'm not an
Anasazi!

            Hi Adrian,

Yes, I gave it a try but nothing changed.

Now, even more interesting is the fact that when I am in an email
and press ctrl+A I do hear "selected" but when in a folder such as "deleted
items" or whatever I hear (nothing selected? In both cases the keystroke
actually works properly although JAWS does not think so. (LOLLOLLOL)

            Oh well, maybe JAWS V12?

            I don't think ctrl+a ever unselects anything. I think CTRL+A
always selects everything.

Hit control a twice that way you can make sure that everything is
selected and unselected that's just my advice. Take it or leave it.

                Hi,

Again, W7 64 bit, Outlook 2007 and an HP Pavilion.

In Outlook when I press ctl+a to select all messages in the
folder JAWS dutifully reports that "Nothing selected" - but - when I do the
shift+delete and then confirm guess what, everything *WAS* selected and all is
gone.

Just thought I would mention the misinformation so someone is
not lulled into thinking that nothing war really selected and makes an
unfortunate discovery. (LOL)
