Sorry to have kept you in suspense. I posted this am before going to work
and just got home.

I'm a serious audiophile. Sometimes I think that I like the equipment more
than the music. A friend, now deceased, was part owner of Krell, if that
name means anything to you. I have a system which I could not otherwise
afford. I also have hundreds of CDs. The quality of music ripped to a
laptop and plugged into your pre amp leaves much to be desired. I learned
the following from an article in the N.Y. Times. There is a device called a
digital to analogue Converter, DAC, I got mine from Sonus Research in
Providence. It goes between the laptop and pre amp. The quality of the
sound is as good as a decent CD Player. The DAC substitutes for the sound
card and chip on the hard drive. I may be getting this a bit wrong for
those of you who are well versed in music reproduction from a pc. I ripped
My entire CD collection to a 500 gb external hard drive and used another one
to back the first up. You may ask why one would convert digital to analog.
Your CD player does it. I used Windows media player. One can adjust the
degree of compression down to near Zero. The Apple program is technically
better in that it zips the music file. I refuse to buy anything from Apple
as a matter of Principle. The I pod should have been made accessible. They
were recently praised for moving in this direction. They did it after being
sued by the state of Mass. In any case, When I select my external drive, it
is entirely music and Jaws announces the name of each artist. Within that
folder rests the various CDsalsoannounced by jaws. I am now free to pick
any CD I want and play it . It sounds great.

Until he posts the information about how we would go about reading the CD
covers (and I assume liner notes?) we won't know if it has anything to do
with JAWS or not.
I admit, however, that we've had a sufficient show of hands indicating
interest, but of course, if one responds to messages in the order in which
one receives them, then one often has no way of knowing that numerous people

have already answered.
