I remedy this problem by using a long lanyard and attaching it to my belt, and
then the drive goes on the lanyard and the attached drive goes into my "watch"
pocket, sometimes called a change pocket now, but was originally for holding
ones pocket watch when those were the main thing available (hard to believe
Levi's have been around that long, eh?)

I as well have an USB extension cable from an old MP3 player that I use to
connect the drive when I'm wearing it this way

Just don't leave that thumb drive on the seat of the bus, or someone else has
access to all your stuff.

Unless you get an application that can lock the thumb drive. Yes, we're back
to that, again.

That's a damn good answer. Thumb drive. I think I'll do that.
    Thank you.

the best way to safeguard/fortify files is a thumb drive... if it ain't
plugged in, they can't be gotten to, and only you know when you plug the little
niggler in so...

next would be a 2.5 inch exterior drive, same facts more room for the
main part. and sd cards can work in the same fashion and are extremely easy to
carry.
