Hi,

That recovery CD doesn't have any Windows setup files on it, but I can't
remember if Toshiba put the XP setup files somewhere on the hard drive
(I used to have the same laptop co-incidentally as Dorothy, until I sold
it to my Sister and got an EEEPC).

The issue with Dorothy posting to the list is very strange indeed, but
seems to happen with both her machines through the Ecartis software that
Freelists are using. We have ruled out different AV products, different
SMTP servers, and also turning off AV completely. My theory is either a
Windows update broke something or (possibly) one of the alleged Trojans
that Kaspersky seemed to find has broken something.

Andrew.

Hi Dorothy, is it xp sp3 you're running on your desktop? Is it home or
pro?
As far as the laptop goes, although I have my doubts and so does
Andrew as
to whether SFC will work using your toshiba recovery cd if it's reached
the
stage of kill or cure it can't do any harm to try.
If you'd like to try it I'll remind you how. I'll put the command to
be
put in the run box just as it should be so copy and paste into the run
box.
First, put your recovery cd into your laptop. When the welcome screen
comes up press alt f4 to close it. Then go to the start menu and to run.
In
the run box paste this
sfc /scannow
That's it. If it'll work it'll work and if it won't it won't, but it
may
be worth a try. It really sounds as if your computers are in a bit of a
state.
Incidentally, if it came to a format and reload is it possible to do
without speech feedback?
                    John.
