Dear Andrew, Many thanks for your reply. When I upgraded my computer much earlier in the year, I just knew that Jaws would throw a wobbly, and it sure did. I e-mailed Dennis at S&S, and he confirmed that Jaws wouldn't recognise my new hardware configuration. I had to re-register, and fortunately I had a life left. Before installing this new back-up hard drive, I e-mailed Dennis at S&S, and asked if I'd have the same problem. He confirmed that it would be so. But to make sure I had a life left, he authorised this with FS. Sure enough, when I booted up with this new hard drive attached, Jaws dutifully told me I was in 40-minute mode, and did I wish to register. I saw no alternative, so downloaded another life. But, as mentioned in my earlier note, the whole purpose of this new hard drive is that it is portable, and my computer should be able to be used with or without it. I really think this new system is pretty awful, although I guess I can see no alternative. Mind you, a friend tells me there is no such registration with Window Eyes. I'll try what George suggests, and boot up without the external disk at a time when I can definitely get in touch. With very best wishes, Keith -----Original Message----- From: jaws-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jaws-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Andrew Hodgson Sent: 30 November 2005 18:03 To: jaws-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [jaws-uk] Re: Jaws with an external device Hi Keith, I don't think this is right. I have used external disks on this machine before and they work fine. However, what I have found is sometimes when starting JFW, I get a message to say it is not registered and have to restart it again. With all the mess this system has caused me - eg, not being able to go through my connection for some very obscure reason, and also despite me reinstalling on exactly the same hardware, the system says I have new hardware and I loose a key, I am seriously thinking of not renewing my SLA as it has now expired, and moving over to Window-eyes or Hal. Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: jaws-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jaws-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of keith Sent: 30 November 2005 16:30 To: Jaws Group Subject: [jaws-uk] Jaws with an external device Dear All, Jaws 7, XP home. I wonder if someone can please help with a query I have. A little while ago I bought an external hard drive for my PC. It connects via a U S B port. When I connected it, and logged on the computer, Jaws recognised that my hardware had changed, and insisted that I re-register. This I did, and all is now fine. I also installed the software to run this external hard drive on my wife's laptop computer, so that I can in effect connect the drive to her computer. However, if I disconnect the drive from my computer, and then boot up my computer, will Jaws again insist that I re-register, thinking that once again the hardware configuration has changed? I sincerely hope not, as this would be a great inconvenience. The hard drive, of its very nature, is a portable device, and there may be many times when I wish to use the computer with the drive not connected. Does anyone please know the situation over this matter? I would welcome some words of comfort. With many thanks.
