Will,
A friend wants to design a Java radio where the interface is in Java and he was asking me about accessibility. What would you recommend?

Thanks,

Nigel;

Short answer... no. None of the other screen readers support Java, so you
would end up having to replicate the Java interface through HTML. This will
bring up various content synchronisation issues, as you would have to ensure
changes made to one interface were reflected in the other. I can see this
working in dynamic, late binding, interfaces, but not in static interfaces.

What application are you thinking of, I might be able to advise a bit
better. I've done a bit of work on dynamic interfaces that adapt to the
needs of a user, and even co-authored a chapter of the Encyclopaedia of
Human Computer Interaction on the topic.

One thought. You could use the strutts architecture from Apache with Java
Server Pages. If you used the distributed version of Java, J2EE, you could
have a rich client interface for some users, and HTML for others, with the
interface tier components running off the same logic layer components.

Will,
Would a combination of HTML and Java be more accessible to other screen
readers?

Thanks,
Nigel
