Hi Joan,

Which version of Outlook are you using? It's important to know this to be able
to give you any specific help.

I'm logging off now but will come back to it tomorrow if nobody else has
answered in the meantime.

All the best,

Jamie

Thanks for that, Jamie. Now, how can I set the thing up so that it will delete
the mail online when deleting from Outlook? I find BT mail hard to use really
so I don't tend to go and delete things online.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Joan.

Hi Joan,

This may not be totally accurate but you'll no doubt get the gist.

IMAP and POP (sometimes called POP3) are standard email options that the end
user can use to tell the email host how to deliver the mail to the end user.
If you have a webmail account, you don't need to use either IMAP or POP and you
can just access your email via a web browser.

If, however, you prefer to access your email using an email client such as
Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook etc, you can set it up with one of these
choices. With POP, the emails are delivered to the end user's computer and the
client software is then used to read the mail. You can choose to leave a copy
of the messages on the server.

With IMAP, my understanding is that all the folders on line are synchronised
with the local computer so the messages and folders on the local computer match
those on the on line server.

The up side of IMAP is that it means that you can read messages on either your
local computer or the server (perhaps when you are away from your computer or
on holiday) and still get access to everything. The down side is that it takes
time to do the synchronisation process. The up side of POP is that it tends to
be faster as it doesn't need to do the synchronisation but, unless you have
chosen to leave copies of messages on the server, you can only access older
messages through the computer the messages have been downloaded to.

This is probably as clear as mud but hopefully it makes some sense.

Jamie

Hi, Mujtava,

What is an Imap account? I know everyone else will know this but I'm really not
a techie. Is this a BT Internet function, or a GPS thing?

I do worry about leaving all that deleted mail on the web because I remember
years ago when it all came flooding onto my computer for some reason.

Best wishes,

Joan.

I manage my gmail with Outlook 2007 using the POP3 setup. And it's best for me
to stick to managing my email that way. Once in a month I log on to the website
and empty my SPAM folder and other junk emails from the inbox. This is because
when you delete an email in outlook it does not delete it from the webmail
account. You can have the cake and eat it too only if you agree to pay for an
IMAP email setup. In this kind of setup your webmail account and outlook client
are in sync and if you delete an email in outlook, the same will happen in your
webmail.

I had trouble with Gmail on my Windows Live Mail, there were always problems
with downloading the message and the settings. The thing with Yahoo is that it
was fine the way it was up till last month and now it is really a mess.

Friend, Gmail is none the better. Their HTML view is our only hope. Despite
switching to this view, you can't do all the stuff the sighted folks can.
Like for example, you want to select a bunch of emails from your inbox and
delete them, you can't. All you can do is check the boxes for each mail and get
lost on what to do with them.

I understand all these email services are putting their best foot forward
towards accessibility, but what I fail to understand is that we are in 2013 and
I think it should have already happened. I get really tired educating companies
like linkedin, Google, Yahoo, Facebook etc. on basic accessibility design of
their websites. I mean they should get it faster right?
