Hello all,
finally found something easy.
My laptop is attached to a keyboard with large yellow keys and I have multimedia buttons and other feature buttons at the very top which had scotch tape over them to keep me from accidentally getting into trouble.

Evidently one of them may not have had enough thickness of tape covering it and it was the mute button!

Solution, my friend and helper installed a tiny bottle cap over the top of the mute button to keep it from being pressed accidentally again, and of course, with more scotch tape. I don't know how I triggered the mute feature before, (I'm blaming my cat for walking over my keyboard (smile) but now I can un mute the sound anytime by simply pulling back the bottle cap and scotch tape! Incidentally, I do have volume buttons on the laptop with more scotch tape over them for safety , but these volume adjustment keys had no effect on reversing the muted sound and we couldn't find if there was a mute button located anywhere on the laptop. Thank you to everyone for the suggestions, I am still going to explore if I can stop the sound icon displaying in the system tray if it's not needed, and the other options, thank you again!

Ariane

Hi Tiffany,

Your solution is a good one assuming it is the mute checkbox being checked.
In my case, the wave volume goes to 0%. I can still used fixed keystroke
sequences but its tricky.

There used to be a program called quick mix or something like that would let you restore your volume levels to their original settings. I do not have the
exact name.

I don't know of a volume up/down or mute keystroke, but occasionally when
pushing my keyboard into it's drawer the mute button is pushed. Besides
multi-media keyboards, sometimes the monitor has mute buttons as well, so I
would see if anything is accidentally hitting either of those.
Otherwise I get around waiting for sighted assistance by making a hot key
which goes directly into volume control. That way all you have to know is to
push the keystroke you assign, and tab twice, followed by space to uncheck
it. all the other checkboxes are every third push of tab.

Subject: [j-say list] accidental sound shut off

Hello all,
for the last few weeks, my sound has abruptly cut off, three times. Not
just jaws speaking, but all sound including chimes etc. even when the
computer is rebooted, which does not resolve the problem.
I have had to ask someone fully sighted to locate an icon on my taskbar to
un mute the sound with a mouse.
Big question-is there a combination of key strokes that I accidentally used
by mistake to mute the sound?
I have been using JSay6 and Dragon (2008 releases) and this is happened only
a few times in a year or more but lately three times in two weeks.

I rarely use the control keys or tab keys because I am clumsy using them,
and mostly use voice commands but now I am fearful of touching the keyboard
and accidentally shutting off the sound again.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Thanks,Ariane
