Please can we try and not confuse our estalished terminology and not call this "freezing". If you can get out of it cleanly with Alt-break then this is relatively harmless and nowhere near the effects of a machine FREEZE - which means the pointer stops moving and all you can do is switch the machine off. Real freezes are a major problem and usually caused by failures in either the hardware or the operating system (though, unfortunately, there are programming errors, in particular in modules, that can cause machine freezes, too). A "freeze" like you described above has nothing to do with the machine as such, it is simply an *application* locking up (NB. not "the machine" locking up). It can be caused by all sorts of simple programming mistakes in applications.
