but rename gave the message that it was locked to stop changes

Others will no doubt be along to give further assistance but in the
meantime...

I wonder if the !Boot file is corrupted. If so you could regenerate it
but you need access to the hard drive to do this. It's conceivable but
unlikely that the fault changed the file system but check using
*status. This can be done from outside the desktop (ShellCLI).
Important things to note are obviously FileSystem: ADFS and Drive: 4.

Thank you for the suggestions Richard. David Ruck provided help via
email on how to rename HardDisc back to HardDisc4 and it is all
working again now.

My wife (who is non-technical and using the Iyonix) was impressed with
the support of the RiscOS community with the use of DiscKnight to fix
the disc map error and help on getting the Iyonix working again. She
was comparing it with the problems her friends have when something
goes wrong using Windows.
