One other thing, The original drive that has been used as master, is it possible it has a 'master with slave' position? Dave L didn't give details of the original drive. I've got an older <1GB drive that even has a 'master with non-compliant ATA slave jumper. I actually had to use this position while connecting it with a CF adapter on my RiscPC. So Dave L, I would check the possible jumpering positions on the original drive as well.
