Something you have to remember about the front-line PSS folks; they have
about 1.2 million other folks "in the queue" and if you ask a pointed
question (does the RPC/HTTP server have to run Windows?), you get a
pointed answer (yes.).

FE will have this information over DSaccess.
It functions over hashing-algorith between Global Catalog and FE server.
FE knows then on which BE the mailboxes are stored.
