That is correct.
This has nothing to do with where the RPC proxy is running.
Go read the Exch deployment docs at isaserver.org; it's well worth your time.

Hi Tom!
Microsoft Support told the mail server must be the server where the
mailboxes are stored. In this case Back-End Exchange.
Is that correct what Microsoft Support told? I have doubt about it.
