Darren,

Yes, the MS CA will work just fine outside the network- they just won't 
automatically be trusted by the client browsers unless they are part of a 
domain and you use group policy to automatically create machine 
certificates or you import the certificate to the trusted root certificates 
for the machine.

Of course, you have to be publishing HTTPS for the SSL session to work, but 
no special filters for the certificates themselves.
