Hi Chris,

If the service is running on the ISA firewall, and only external hosts
are accessing the service, then a packet filter is the only requirement.
No Server Publishing Rule is required because you don't gain anything
from creating one. The advantage of Server Publishing Rules is that it
can expose the connection to ALF.

Even though in the server publishing rule I need to specify a protocol
definition?

And hey, while its not a best practice, its a cute, tiny little service.
How
many boxes do you think I am allowed to have??? <grin> Next you'll want
me
to test on a lab set up! <bigger grin>

Thanks Tom!

Chris

Hi Chris,

Ouch! Services on the firewall? What will I hear next? ;-)

In that case, you can either use a Server Publishing Rule or a packet
filter. NEVER are both required.

Hi Chris,

Is this a client application or a service that you want to make
available to external hosts?

Thanks!

If the service is on the ISA server will the packet filter alone do or
do I
need a publishing rule as well?

Hi Chris,

Protocol Rules are only for outbound access from LAT to non-LAT hosts.

Publishing Rules are used for inbound access.

NOTE: the nomenclature completely changes with ISA Server 2004 :-)

So the rules under PROTOCOL RULES can be inbound or outbound depending
on
the client set allowed to use the rule?
