congrats. you can now enjoy a fresh re-install because most distros
would have their package management software in /usr/bin. (apt-get,
rpm, etc.,.)

Any distro that puts its package management software in /usr/bin needs
to have its collective head examined. Package management software is
integral for the rescue environment the distro provides, and cannot be
on potentially NFS-mounted filesystems, or filesystems that are not
available during system startup.
It is a good idea to mount /usr read-only not only because its safe
but also because /usr is usually big and a period fsck might be a
waste of time :)
