No - it is the floppy that is universal. For example, I prefer to have
no CD drives in my servers (rack-optimised 1U servers) so that I can
fit in an additional disk. Older machines do not have CD drives, if
they exist they are not bootable and so on. The rescue system is
probably the only reason to have floppies around any longer.
Here's where I'll vehemently disagree - neither the floppy media nor
the drive is reliable, especially under Indian conditions. Moreover,
most new machines ship without a floppy drive, especially 1U servers.
Finally, it's no longer possible to fit an entire rescue image on
a single floppy, especially if it has to have a full set of drivers,
modules, utilities for recovery, etc.
About the only thing the floppy is useful for is DOS or Windows 95
recovery, and BIOS upgrades.
As long as your /var/lib/rpm/Packages file is intact, you should be
able to recover quite OK. What problems did you have, exactly?
That's the whole problem - it does not verify that the entire
fileset of each listed RPM is still installed and intact.
