Try running it manually. I could start with following options.
*root@Linus:/var/run/mysqld# /usr/sbin/mysqld --datadir=/var/lib/mysql
--pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid --port=3306
--socket=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock

090901 18:54:14 [Note] /usr/sbin/mysqld: ready for connections.
