Which distro?
For C program, you need to have gcc (GNU C Compiler)
installed on your system. Try this,
#whereis gcc
If it tells you the path, it is installed. Else, you
can install it from your installation CD.

For Java, you need to have J2SE installed in your
system. If its installed you will see the path in the
output of:
#whereis java
