We have been discussing these things in two threads :)
If you ask me, today , people are expecting Solutions. They are more
inclined to the nature that , If they insert DVD/VCD/MP3 disc/Audio CD
it just has to play. They are not even bothered of DRM or patents. They
are asking for out of the box support. If you tell them about DRM and
other stuffs, they are not going to listen to us. I have faced such
problems with many people :(.
Products produce "solutions". You are free to cater to such people
moving into short term benefits but claiming that everyone is expecting
such solutions or that only technical arguments are the valid ones while
taking other aspects of the system as granted are going to create *more*
issues like the above. There is no way to implement a Free software
player for a proprietary codec restricted by patents. There is no way
to solve issues like software patents in a technical way since it is
fundamentally not a technical problem at all. If your "solution" is to
include non-free software, go ahead. Good luck to you.
