Did you have a power failure / hard reset that resulted in a bad file
system? Try this:
1. Boot using your installation CD.
2. goto the console of your installation CD (typically ALT+F2).
3. fsck your disk partition(s).
4. If '3' succeeds, mount the disk partition(s). If this step
succeeds, I think, the problem is elsewhere. Not in your hard
drive/partitions/file system.
