Hi,
I backed up the files and restarted with default boot
type as 5 (GUI mode). it didnt seem to work out as the
GUI seems to crashed after the intial boot sequences.
i also tried the "monitor-shutdown" method with
failure. i tried booting with the commandline entry
(init=3) and once inside, i triggered the GUI
(startx). that seems to work fine. ut if i try to
revert to my normal GUI boot-up sequence, the problem
reoccurs. how come it works when i trigger GUI from
within the command prompt and not in the initial login
screen? what am i missing here? can u pls give me any
other leads in this?

if bala is the user /home/bala
then there is a hidden folder called .gnome and
.gnome-desktop
backup and delete and login. it will work for sure.
