I have come accross this many times. It will try to give the GUI
screen and crash.
Here is a quick solution:
What i do is reboot the machine, get into text mode(init 3) from bootloader,
login and startx(save the prev log for reasearch). If that started the GUI
then, logout again and init 5. You will see the login screen. If you didn't
get the GUI mode after startx, then read further.
For this, first thing to checkout/correct will be ip & hostname.
Did you change the ip/hostname before, Does ping to your hostname pings your
system ip/lo? If all these are fine then dig the XFree86 logs and Google.
