1GB RAM is preferred.

Seagagte has better reliability than Maxtor, Samsung, etc.
Get a decent UPS.
Ensure all other hardware you get (video, audio, nic, etc) are
are supported out of the box. Unsupported hardware is a pain.
Depending on your workload, any modern CPU should do so
I would give it the least importance. Intel VT-x (found on Conroe)
is nice as it allows you to run an unmodified OS (WinXP) as a
Xen guest. If you dont need this feature, buy a Celeron or Sempron.
Naturally, you will have to do some research before finalising on
your components, and from experience, it's usually good fun.
It will make you more informed about what you are purchasing
as a customer.
