I believe the intention is good, but a mailing list is a mailing list.
Let people make the decision to stay put or go away. If they find it
unbearable, there are other places to find technical advice. I believe
you or me cannot make the decision to exclude anybody else, on what we
personally think is right or wrong. It's a slippery slope, and will
cause all sorts of heartburn for people.
The discussions get sometimes passionate because people _care_ about an
issue. Yes, they sometimes get out of hand, but it is the outcome of
some debates. If somebody is being irrational, I'm sure the community
will reprimand him. Kicking out spammers is one matter, but kicking out
people because they expressed opinions is an entirely different matter.
The whole question of "how much is too much" will itself cause plenty of
useless discussions.
