Try sylpheed if you are looking for a lean e-mail
client. Better yet, try mutt+range of helper tools
on the command line if you need an email client on
steroids.

PS: I've been using Opera for both web-browsing
and emails for sometime and I've found it
exceptionally good in terms of speed and less
memory usage compared to other graphical clients.
