No sane server will accept mails from unresolvable servers.
You will require a valid forward & reverse lookup if you need to send
mails to internet.
forward lookup is usually sufficient. this very mailing list does not have
reverse lookup on its server but it works. because of partly technical and
partly administrative reasons, many providers in this part of the world are
not in a position to provide reverse lookup. also, you can send mail out
without working forward lookups also (at least for some time) using your isp's
mail relay host.
The general trend in anti spam policies is to block all servers without
reverse lookup, or any ip address which falls into dynamic range, etc.
I have seen many a servers reject mail without valid reverse lookup.
In fact this mailing list final relay to internet is a valid one. This is
what i have from the headers of this mail.

DNS lookups for the server..
$ host www.ae.iitm.ac.in
www.ae.iitm.ac.in has address 203.199.213.51
$ host 203.199.213.51
51.213.199.203.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer www.ae.iitm.ac.in.
There a whole lot of internal servers before this relay that can't be
looked up. May be a hosts entry is made to accommodate them.
