As you said, thin clients would be ideal for this setup.
The thing I like about thinclients in situations like these is that you
dont need to manage / maintain them at all - just turn them on and they
are good to go, you only need to maintain and manage the main server (
and pretty much any decent'ish machine that is less than 2 years old
should be able to run 6 thin clients with no issues )
btw, someone mentioned thin clients at Rs.7,500/- a few months back on
the ilug-delhi list.
