RFIDs are generically very shot range. For it to cover the distance
between
the bus and the bus shelter (especially considering the drivers stopping
the
bus at will) you might require some exotic variant which might be
costlier
than a GPS+GPRS solution. Effectively a smart phone with GPS is enough to
act the server in the bus.


I think even in Chennai, some buses have been fitted with a GPS+GPRS system
that will inform a server its locations. The project idea is to have a
communication system in place in bus shelters which commuters can connect
to
and query the system.

Slightly making it OT, there is a site which makes the live MTC GPS data of
 available online but works only on IE. *Sick*

http://alert.net.in/eta/ Its been there for almost a year now, but wonder
how many people use it.There was no PR what so ever and sometimes the data
is not useful as not all buses on a route are GPS enabled.
