Any idea if it was created with Office 2007?  I believe OO has a plugin
 for Office2007 format - you will have to search for it.

Nope, Office 2007 files open without a hitch in Oo.org-2.3 in ubuntu 7.10.
Though the new XML format can only be opened in read only mode.
Dhanagopal are you sure that the file is OK? And what do error you get
on opening it?
