I assume you are looking for details about using Amazon EC2 node with
AWS. The node may run an application that might have 1000 users.
If my assumption is right, here are the details:
Small 1.7gb ram/160gb/32 bit - 0.125 per hour - $90 per month
Large 7gb ram/850gb/64 bit - 0.50 per hour - $360 per month
Extra Large 15gb ram/1690gb/64 bit - $1 per hour - $720 per month
You may create 1 or more virtual nodes depending on the unit type.
I've used the Small node for R&D purposes. It's good and easy to
manage/work remotely. AFAIK, Amazon EC2 does not have good reputation
when it comes to uptime. This setup can be used to run "temporary high
volume parallel data processing", or demonstrating a feature, but not
for permanent production sites.
And how does it compare with slices from Linode or Slicehost?
I've not used both these services. You may also explore the scope of
using CollabNet Lab Management tool, a cloud based service for
developers in a virtual platform. Developers at Reuters, American
Express, Deutsche Bank use this tool to similar magnitude you are
looking into.
