It works great with BT in UK and a couple of other guys I have tried
it with; is anyone using it with any of the ISPs in Chennai? I am on
Tata Indicom broadband in Chennai (earlier VSNL broadband, still
earlier Dishnet DSL).
I would recommend using the ISP-supplied ADSL modem, and
getting a Linksys WRT54G instead for the WiFi/Routing portion.
The main advantage is that the Linksys has alternative Linux-based
images/routing distros available for customizing it.
Does anyone
have any suggestions for a decent cheap linux-compatible ethernet card
for this PC?
I've been having great luck with used 3Com 3c905 and Intel 82557/8/9
cards available from electronic scrap dealers for ~Rs.100 each. Both can
deliver close to the rated 100 Mbps with minimal interrupt overhead on the
CPU. Avoid Realtek like the plague - that seems to be the only chipset
on new cards available locally, but the CPU overhead is too high for serious
routing applications, and it costs 4x the cards I referenced earlier.
Early Realteks had a serious bug related to the use of an in-band non-
escaped data-pattern as some kind of state machine reset on the MAC (this
may have been fixed on the 8139c, but I'm taking no chances. Anybody
who designed that kind of crap would have left other undetected crap
floating around as well.)
Stick with Intel 82557/8/9, DEC/Intel 2114x (Tulip), AMD PCnet or 3Com,
and you'll have no problems. Use Realtek as a last resort, and only on client
desktops.
