Let me summarize the minutes of meeting.
Around 15 of members met in the venue. As it took sometime for
Mr.Umashankar to arrive we discussed about organising the walk. There
has been couple of light comments about the way we co-ordinate this
event. We have plans to invite couple of colleges to participate.
Next, Bhuvan distributed the Ubuntu Tshirts to couple of members.
Next, a member (please update his name) explained about the purpose of
GPLV3. He stated couple of differences betweeen it and its
counterpart. We also discussed about its impact in GNU/Linux
licensing.
Meanwhile, Mr.Umashankar have arrived. Bharathi formally introduced
him to the group and left the stage for him. Mr.Umashankar explained
why he is here and what he expects. He spoke for around 2hrs (?) and
cleared indicated what he expects from the community.
Summary:
1) ELCOT is setting up a call-center to support the staffs of all
Govt. departments. The call center agents will provide support to
them. In case they cant, they will escalate it to the ILUGC volunteer
who may be on call. If he is available, he can attend. If he is not
available, he can send a message so it will be escalated to next
volunteer in queue. The volunteers would be paid for every
successful/unsuccessful call they attend. They are in the process to
building an website specifically for this purpose.
2) ELCOT is planning to setup software development R&D center. It is
expected to be opened during jan 2007 in chennai. He need volunteers
to recruit and train the staffs. The softwares developed by this team
would be used by many Govt. departments and it will be released under
an open source license.
3) He need volunteers across all district headquarters to support the
staffs of the Govt. departments when they face issues.
On hand he had an issue with setting Tamil unicode font for linux. He
needed someone from our group to setup. Shrinivasan volunteered to do
that. Next, he was so happy using opensuse. Couple of Ubuntu fans in
the group suggested him to try as it is very cool. He gladly accepted
it and needed someone from our group to install and configure. Bhuvan
volunteered to do that.
In addition, he also accepted to host monthly/weekly ILUGC meeting at
his premise. He also confirmed to provide coffee and tiffin to all
participants! (As soon as he returned to office it was the first order
he passed)
Finally, Raman acknowledged his requirements and confirmed that ILUGC
would devise a plan to address those needs. He also hinted about the
walk we are planning and we may seek his assistance!
