You can download PDFs from your computer into the Kindle. It works.
But looks like crap :). It's not in the interests of Amazon to promote
an open standard like PDF, so the books are best seen in .mobi or their
proprietary .azw format. There is no resolution adjustment for PDF, so
the text looks tiny and almost unreadable. Calibre can do a decent job
of converting from PDF to Kindle-readable formats, but it's not perfect.
I've seen images gobbled up text looks all sorts of weird.
Your best bet would be get the Nook (e-ink, non-color one). At least it
supports pdf, epub and other open formats correctly and doesn't try to
take your freedoms away. If you want color and turn it into some sort of
cheap tablet, you should get the Nook Color and flash it with CyanogenMod.
