On the contrary, these hardware devices are pretty much subsidized. The
business model is to provide the hardware at a low price (probably even at a
loss) and to make money in the content. The same way a DTH operator works.
This business model requires certain hardware features like 3G to make it
easy for the user to buy the content as easily as possible.
