Hi All,
No. Nothing useful in this email. Don't waste time reading it...
Like I told you all the last time (my first post), I was just trying to get
clean by installing only freeware and legal software on my PC. As a first
step, I had thought of installing Linux as my OS.
Just imagine my plight when the installer failed twice because of bad disc
media (I have never ever encountered bad media error in the hundred odd
times I would have installed windows, msdn, visual studio, etc), the inbuilt
onboard soundcard was not detected, my mouse froze on the center of the
screen, (not to mention the Xentrix-modem problem that I continue to have).
No, I don't claim Linux geek status, and probably don't deserve posting to
this group even. But, then, how do you explain the SIMILAR STATE OF
HELPLESSNESS that my network engineers displayed (guys who had installed red
hat distributions almost every other week and tweaked with stuff no end)?
And, you know what? The media was bad in one of the discs, and one (with a
windows-experience in the previous lifetime at least) would expect an
okay/retry/cancel option right? And, you know what this installer gave me?
"Unable to unpack file blahblahblah. This usually happens due to bad/corrupt
media. Hit return to try again. And, NO CANCEL BUTTON !!
Imagine my ignominy when I had to "hard-reboot" my system at that point,
just to make this dumb installer to release my CD!
Hey, guys, let me tell you...
Linux doesn't need a Visual Basic, though Mike Hillyer seems to maintain

Linux doesn't need a killer game, though Ian Bonham maintains otherwise.

It just needs a better installer and a greater recognition of sundry

P.S:- Just come to think of it, I haven't even STARTED trying to install my
Umax 2000P scanner or my 3Com HomeConnect webcam. :-(
