It is because it has potential to hurt the employer and undermine the 
team. People go, "Hey look, the assembly line chief at Ford is driving a 
Corolla to work". Again, pay attention to nuance. They are not banned, 
they are merely frowned upon.

I'd say it is a big plus since it means managers aren't poking their
collective nose into how you are doing your work, less interference in
one area might suggest the same in others.  It also shows they're
secure in who they are, and don't feel that forcing false, lets call
it "team spririt", is required.  The fact that employees can go again
the "team spirit" of the last sentence, shows tolerance and an open
culture.  
Encouraging people to dog food their own products is not false team 
spirit. It is a crucial component of product engineering and small but 
important demonstration of confidence and pride in your products.
