Though the advice was definitely good no doubt, if things are going
wrong at the kernel TCP level then nothing in userland can change that.
One thing you can try is this.
# sysctl net.inet.tcp.sendspace=65535
# sysctl net.inet.tcp.recvspace=65535
If this works you are very lucky.
I know for sure this impacts the bandwidth delay product directly and
that you can get *huge* performance improvements in bandwidth provided;
provided of course you have real wire bandwidth and there are no other
overheads/bottlenecks.
As always there is a legal clause - ceteris paribus.
Anyway please do not hold me on this since it is only an experiment.
If this does not work then perhaps I can come up with other ideas.
And most importantly I want you to try this.
$ cd /tmp
$ wget
ftp://ftp.openssl.org/source/openssl-0.9.8a.tar.gz
instead of firefox.
Bandwidth "guessing" works like a pendulum. It sways both ways till it
arrives at a reasonable guess and this you can know only when the
pendulum settles at the middle.
So wait for a few seconds and once the dust settles note down the
bandwidth.
Try it and get back.
