You can also develop nice front ends on PHP-Gtk (
http://gtk.php.net/)
using PHP's Gtk Bindings. This means you just need to pick up PHP and
have the php-gtk docs, samples. Although it is considered stable, there
are a lot of regions where it lags. There is no good support for GNOME
widgets and you'd end up writing your own custom widgets in such cases
(which is a pain).
