If you use KDE or GNOME, then it is simple. GNOME, I don't recall now,
but for KDE, Go to the Control Center, choose "Regional..." and there,
choose "Keyboard Layouts". On the left, you'll find lots of different
keyboard layouts on ce you enable keyboard layouts. Find the Malayalam
and Tamil ones, and add them. Once you are done, you will notice that
at the bottom right of your screen, there is an icon with the US flag
(assuming your keyboard is a us layout). Clicking on it cycles through
Malayalam, Tamil and back to English keyboards. I am sure there is a
similar way in GNOME. Since you are using Debian etch, do
apt-get install ttf-malayalam-fonts ttf-tamil-fonts
if you have not done so already.
