Is gcc installed on your machine ? Try typing 'gcc' at your shell
prompt and check if you get a message like 'gcc: no input files'.
There are many ways to start learning linux. Here are some tips:
1. Buy a good book on Linux. There are many books that can get you
introduced to Linux.
2. Browse through documentation available on http://www.tldp.org/. ;
Though the site is vast, you can select specific topics that interests
you.
3. There's an excellent online guide to Linux. Check the URL:
http://www.icon.co.za/~psheer/book/index.html.gz
4. Socialize with people who use Linux (LUGs for instance).
5. Google!
