Ganesh,
If the socket resembles as of telephone jack and
slightly bigger, it is a RJ45 a standard to connect
ethernet nodes.
if you are just having two computers and would like do
data transfer you need to have cross-over cable
ethernet cable with RJ45 at both ends.
if you do not have cross over cable, then, you can
introduce a hub .the basic function of a simple hub is
to repeat the signals that it gets . i.e., it
amplifies the signal and nothing else. you should
find a normal hub in every place of your computer lab.
the hub will have number of ports on its front side to
accept the RJ45 mentioned above.
take two RJ45 cable and connect both the computers to
the hub. now try pinging or ssh .

used 10.133.1.5 and 10.133.1.6. There was a
typographical error in my
message and I had used a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0
and I left my DNS
names blank. Then I tried "ssh 10.133.1.5" from the
other computer.
The details of my cable are as follows. The

I don't understand what is meant by a hub. My
computer is not
with me right now. I will try out all the subnet
masks possible and
