I don't understand what is meant by a hub.
When signals travel through the cable, over a distance, the voltage level
reduces and beyond certain length it would not be possible to distinguish
between 0's and 1's. Hub is a device connected to the cable before this
critical length so that it restores the voltage levels.
When two computers are connected directly, the 'Send' pin of one computer
should be connected to the 'receive' of the other, Cross over cables are used
to achieve just this.
I will try out all the subnet masks possible and
IMHO, its a waste of time. Don't just waste your time trying randomly all
possible values. Instead understand the underlying concept and arrive at the
best possible value. The time spent in understanding is worth it - You would
have finally saved a lot of time.
I have seen people doing this sort of random manipulation, this is especially
hazardous is the linux world. Enter one wrong command and you are easily in
trouble.
