Hi Shrini,
Today, I was talking with a Unix(AIX) guy.
Good
He told me that AIX and Mainframe are the big Unixes.
Linux is like a small kid.
Very True.
He told that Mainframe is like a whale, AIX is like Elephant and Linux is
like Pet Dog.
Depends on what he actually means. I think he is actually speaking about
the Huge metal monsters . Let me explain what i think is this guy saying to
you. The traditional *nix are all capable of running Huge SMP systems .
While linux is not.
Wait.. don't rip my head off by stating that the worlds top super computers
run GNU/Linux
I know that. but the fact remains that these feats are all acheived by
running them as clusters and not as a single image as with the other *nix
OS.
All I have heard about Linux with image SMP is some thing from SGI but i see
most of the huge implementations of Linux based on clustering. ( correct me
if i am wrong .. i am not an expert on these matters just voicing my
opinion based on what i have read , worked and heard.)
However this should not be any reason for hurt. As the old OS were
supporting what they wanted while Linux was always developed the way
community wanted it to be. if there is a big need for Huge SMP based
monolithic monster, well i am sure the open source community would have
created it a long time back.
as far as Elephants, whales and pet dogs are concerned, I would rather have
a pet dog.
They have their own biggest strengths. Linux can not even touch the heights
of them.
I don't know about touching some one else's heights, achieving what Linux
has achieved is no mean feat . But if there is still a lot more that needs
to be done, then i am sure that it will be achieved by sticking to the OS
that we all love .
But he told that "You know only Linux. You never know AIX or Mainframe.
Know
them and tell".
Well That is a valid argument, but i would have asked a list of the so
called strong points that GNU/Linux could not even touch !!!
How linux is better with other unix systems?
This will take us down a dangerous slope, However, many of us know of
Open BSD's reputation with security, and NetBSD's portability. If any thing
The answer given is oft repeated that it is one of choice, made by you.. the
ultimate user.. what ever be the arguments one would put before you say
stating the advantavges of AIX over Linux, i some how find it hard that you
would now switch to AIX!! now would you???
:-)
