Hi,
Linux has many different flavors known as distributions. Examples are
RedHat, Fedora, Ubuntu, Suse, Gentoo etc. First decide which
distribution you want to use. Each of the distributions have some
differences. Some are easy to use for a new user's point of view, some
are very stable to be run as servers, some need to be compiled from
source etc.
Try out more than one flavor of GNU/Linux distros. Start with Ubuntu,
try Fedora, try Suse, try Knoppix, try Mandrake... after you have tried
with a few (atleast a two) adopt one. Each one have their own features,
it depends upon what suits you. We have our Ubuntu Dapper systems as our
development boxes. So, as far as an average user is considered most
distros will fit into your requirements.
(this is what I've learned in my 2 month stint with Linux.
The gurus (I see there a quite a few of them here) please correct me if
I'm wrong)
If you ask people out here, 99% of them don't themselves consider to be
Linux-Gurus. We are User's with wide range of experience and we are here
as a Community to share our experience for mutual benefit and for the
spirit of community. Everyone can be a guru to you at some point of time ;)
I'd suggest Ubuntu Linux (http://www.ubuntu.com/). It is easy to install
and use. You can download the CD image from any of the sites mentioned
here - http://www.ubuntu.com/download . The site also has torrent files,
if you want to use BitTorrent. You can also order free CDs from -
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/. They usually take a month or two to reach you.
Don't waste shipping CDs, we have them with us. Just get me/us an empty
CD and you will get your own copy of Ubuntu Dapper/Kubuntu/Edubuntu :)
(For first 5 requests will get some cool Ubuntu stickers too ;) )
