True. In case of some 64bit distros chroot is the only option to run
java/flash/openoffice.

Please pray tell me how and why this is needed. Won't they
work under 32 bit emulation? Is it a shared lib problem?
64 bit versions of java/flash/openoffice were not available when I last
tried a 64 bit distro, so I had to install 32 bit versions of these
applications. 32 bit applications needs 32 bit versions of the libraries
(libc, pthread, gtk, ...) and multi lib support was not availabe (i.e, 32
bit and 64 bit libraries cannot co-exist) so these applications were
installed on a separate partition along with the dependent 32 bit libraries.
32 bit applications can now be executed after chrooting to the new
partition. All the mess can be avoided when multilib will finally be in Edgy
eft. I guess Gentoo already supports mixed libraries.
