I know that you are only quoting from an ancient thread but we should
stop talking about or even thinking about Minix.
It is an academic project by Tananbaum. He may be a great teacher and
an academician but one should remember that he is not an engineer.
As far as my small brain remembers, the origin of the Linux is related
to Minix. Also, we weren't trying to put up anything related to
Tananbaum here. We were just recollecting something from ancient threads
which were "init" scripts for some history to happen later. :)
Yow! You've got to be kidding ... Uncle T wrote three operating
systems, wrote a compiler framework (which RMS wanted to base GCC on)
... so he's an engineer's engineer -- a hacker's hacker ... :)
We are engineers and hackers and we want things that work and work
well in the real world.
Minix was and is used in the real world. Minix 3 was released this year.
And just to make things clear ... that was Linus' post announcing
Linux (or Freax, as I think he wanted to call it).
Again, Mine and Roshan's earlier posts where just a recollection of
Linus's first post, about what later became Linux. It was made to just
remember what happened almost 15 years ago, when nobody thought
something called as Linux might ever come :) Its just to celebrate the
day by recalling how it all started. :)
