if you want to do gnu/linux techno-blunder hubba-hubba preaching then mail
him off-list. please ? i bet if they look at stats for ilugc half the
posts will be your 'now here sonny, its not linux but gnu/linux'.
seriously, i agree with you. everybody does. the logic is there. then why
cant you even take the pains to say it nicely ? 'sinking ship', 'killing
people' , 'technical blunder' and other choice adjectives. what makes you
think people will know things just like that ? do you aknow other fields,
all of them ? what exactly is your point ? cut some slack for newbies.
having said this i will constructively offer two ways to do this. they
might be more, please feel free to choose. they are: a) reply to the MAIL
dammit and then in a p.s or as last line say 'hey you know the real name
is gnu/linux because linux is just the kernel and gnu is the system on
it'. is that tough ? b) reply to them offlist with your pet rant. both
of these are perfectly acceptable.
think about it.
everyday i hear __extremely___ intelligent people say 'oh linux. that geek
system', 'oh linux, yeah i tried it man and some guy came after me for
making some stupid mistake'. its frustrating because these are the same
people who will really understand the value of open source systems when
they see it. but you throw them off. maybe first few times they dont
understand. if you are so damn confident of gnu and its greatness then
eventually it WILL appeal to their senses that indeed gnu is the system
with lk as the core.
i think you will be absolutely surprised by the results. it will be `the
nice guy on the list helped me`....mentality is people will hear MORE of
what you have to say than less. thats Manners 101 for you.
technical life is not social life. please draw the difference between
flaming on technical issues rather than personal ones.
do what you do well. if you are a preacher then preach nicely.
frankly i started out much much more radical than you did [ask prabhu]
however i dont believe in it now, fundamentally dont believe in this kind
of zealotry, i would take the suits thank you . doing EE after CS has
helped me open up in that sense. i can sense frustration of a person who
cannot get a simple thing done and ask a small qn only to get immediately
flamed at the same being wholly competent in another field. its one word -
unprofessional.
if you want to be in mainstrame please grow up. otherwise you are always
indie, fringe, hippie whatever. go and cry on slashdot with the other
trolls.
i postponed this reply many times. now that ravi [hi:)] has spoken and
prof.sriram i decide to bite, because i am not interested in an individual
flamewar but vox populi.

Any browser cannot run on the kernel per se. I have yet to see one
;-) Do not mistakenly think that the kernel Linux does everything. By
spreading this lie, you are committing a technical blunder. The actual
system should be called as GNU/Linux and it is easier to call it as
GNU. Calling the system Linux is false, it is the GNU system.
